Profile of Conscience and Courage: Carl Zeidler

This lesson explores the notions of conscience and courage through the story of Carl Zeidler, who left his position as Milwaukee’s mayor to enlist in the U.S. Navy Reserve, even though he was eligible for a deferment as a government employee. Students will reconstruct Zeidler’s life using evidence from historical newspapers.
