Motherhood and War: A Story of Hope, Loss, and Mourning

Motherhood and War: A Story of Hope, Loss, and Mourning

This lesson explores war from a mother’s perspective. Anna Rosenblum’s son Captain Matthew Rosenblum was declared missing in action (MIA) after his capture and Prisoner of War (POW) status during WWII. Capt. Rosenblum was eventually declared dead by the U.S. government. Like millions of other mothers from around the world, Anna Rosenblum faced years of pain and uncertainty over the fate of her son. Her experience as a mother who refused to lose hope captures the universal themes of motherly love, perseverance, and eventually life-long mourning that transcend national borders and identities.
