AFTER GRADUATING FROM MILWAUKEE’S WEST DIVISION HIGH SCHOOL, DOUGLAS MACARTHUR RECEIVED A NOMINATION TO THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT FROM MILWAUKEE CONGRESSMAN THEOBALD OTJEN IN 1899.
“I cannot tell you with what emotion I come again to my ancestral home,” MacArthur told the crowd when he returned to Milwaukee for the dedication of MacArthur Square in 1951. The MacArthur statue was dedicated in MacArthur Square in 1979 but the city’s veterans and civic leaders wanted to find a more prominent spot for the statue commemorating the city’s famous WWII leader.
The statue was moved to its current location in Veterans Park in May 2014 and officially unveiled in June 2014, to coincide with the 35th anniversary of MacArthur Memorial Week. At the ceremony, wreaths were placed around the statue by representatives from the U.S., Australia, Japan, Philippines and South Korea in honor of Gen. MacArthur’s military service to those countries.
