Service Experience Day

Service Experience Day is the War Memorial Center’s signature event for students in grades 4-6. Launched in 2019, this program is now held four times a year – two dates in the spring and two dates in the fall – with a capacity for 150 students each day.

Service Experience Day is one way we engage veterans in our community, providing a unique opportunity for them to tell children about their military experience – whether they are combat veterans or served outside of war zones or during peacetime, active duty, or in the National Guard or reserves.

Educators

The War Memorial Center provides unique opportunities for students to learn about history and the first-hand accounts of local veterans. At Service Experience Day, students in groups of 3-4 are guided through stations with veterans of all military branches and service eras since WWII. We provide clipboards with interview questions for all students so they can hit the ground running. Veterans will answer questions and show them items such as photos, letters, documents, and awards from their service.
Students will:
  • Get their own clipboards and activity sheets to guide them through the day.
  • Talk to U.S. military veterans from WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Global War on Terror and other military eras.
  • Hear Civil War music from the famed 1st Brigade Band.
  • Examine items at our Exploration Station.
  • Read real WWII letters.
  • Touch and try on authentic military uniforms and equipment.
  • Learn about the Missing Man Table.
  • Meet Donut Dollies.
  • Finish the day with a flag-retirement ceremony on our plaza overlooking Lake Michigan.
Choose from one of four dates a year, two in spring and two in fall. Space is limited to 150 students, so register early. Due to popular demand, students may only attend on one date per school year.

Veterans

The War Memorial Center is proud to provide this opportunity to veterans and current military members to share their service stories with local students in grades 4-6. At Service Experience Day, students will come to your table in groups of 3-4 and will have clipboards with questions to ask you. You should bring items from your service for them to look at, like photos, letters, documents, books, awards and pieces of your uniform. Each veteran could speak to 3-6 groups of students in a 1.5-hour timeframe. Afterward, veterans are invited to enjoy the exhibits, performances, and the flag retirement ceremony on Fitch Plaza overlooking Lake Michigan. To help make sure this experience is rewarding for both veterans and students, the War Memorial Center provides a free coaching session for veterans prior to the event (refreshments included!).

Let us know the Service Experience Day date that is best for you and let us know if you are interested in the coaching session.

Volunteers

The War Memorial Center education program relies on the help of volunteers to put on our large events. For Service Experience Day, 10-12 volunteers are needed to greet school buses, direct groups to the right place, monitor stations, and provide basic information. When you aren’t doing these things, you are invited to enjoy the programs! This is a really fun day and a rewarding volunteer opportunity with the chance to meet many local veterans and make sure our student visitors have a memorable experience.

Exhibitors & Performers

Service Experience Day is our most popular student education program, serving 600 students a year over four dates. The purpose of the event is to show students in grades 4-6 all the facets of military service. We are always looking for groups and individuals who can help students understand service throughout history.

Exhibitors and performers will be directly engaging with students between 9:30 am and 12 pm. The best kinds of exhibits and performances are those that appeal to multiple senses and provide some tactile opportunities (the students want to touch things!), along with educational touchpoints.
