Vietnam Vets Descend on WMC LZ
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, hundreds of people came to remember and honor those who served.
The free musical tribute event was inspired by Rolling Stone Magazine’s #1 Music Book of 2015 We Gotta Get Out of this Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War by UW-Madison professors Doug Bradley and Craig Werner. The authors held a lively discussion and book signing in Memorial Hall, exploring how and why U.S. troops turned to music as a way of coping with the war. Many veterans in attendance shared their stories of what favorite songs meant to them.
The event then moved to Fitch Plaza, where the band Boomer Nation performed many of the songs of that era. The mess hall was staffed by Troop Cafe, a non-profit Milwaukee eatery that provides food service training to veterans. Dryhootch and other food trucks were parked in front of the War Memorial making for a festive atmosphere.
The traveling exhibit Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name was also on display. It features a photo for each of the 1,161 Wisconsinites officially listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.
