Veterans Day at WMC: Veteran of the Year, Parade and More!
At the War Memorial Center, we believe that every day is Veterans Day. But, there is no doubt that November is a special month. The Veterans Day activities started November 4th with the annual Veterans Day Parade through downtown Milwaukee. The parade is always held the Saturday before Veterans Day and ends at here at WMC.

Veterans Day Events
The following Saturday, November 11th was another busy day at WMC with the American Legion’s Milwaukee Police Post 415 and the Firefighters Post 426 hosting a moving ceremony on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month.
That evening, the Veterans Board of Directors hosted its annual Veterans Banquet and announced the 2017-2018 Veteran of the Year for Milwaukee County. Congratulations to Charles Wallens, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.)
Wallens, pictured right, served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Lt. Col. Wallens was drafted into the Army in 1944, but was eventually appointed to West Point Military Academy and got an MBA from Harvard.
Charles also served as a Signal Officer in charge of nuclear weapons for the Korean Army in 1962. His duties with the Army took him around the globe and he retired in 1970. He was nominated by Jewish War Veterans who stated:
“There is no one in Milwaukee with a bigger heart and more ambition than this nominee. He treats every person with dignity and respect.”
