Architect Eero Saarinen
Dedicated on Veterans Day 1957, The War Memorial Center is the stunning architectural achievement of renowned Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, whose projects also included the St. Louis Gateway Arch, New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.
Praised by Time Magazine as “one of the country’s finest examples of modern architecture put to work for civic purposes,” the War Memorial Center’s unique design features a floating cruciform with cantilevered portions, now considered classic in the development of modern architecture. It was designated a Milwaukee Landmark in 1974 in honor of its architectural and cultural significance to the community.
Most importantly, it continues to serve as a fitting memorial to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Services.
