Purple Heart Day of Honor
Every year, the War Memorial Center honors all those who have been given the oldest military award still given to members of the U.S. military — the Purple Heart.
This year our ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at noon at the War Memorial Center. The invocation will be given by Archbishop Jerome Listecki and the Keynote Speaker is Dr. Kenneth Lee, Chief of the Spinal Cord Injury Division at the Zablocki VA Medical Center.
The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy or awarded posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is the oldest military decoration in present use.
As a tribute to the servicemen and women who have been awarded this honor, a Purple Heart Memorial was installed on the grounds of the War Memorial Center in 2008.
