MUHS Students Visit WMC
Middle school students from Marquette University High School’s summer school program attended the War Memorial Center recently for two days of programming that featured first-hand accounts of combat service from veterans from WWII and Vietnam.
One highlight from the students’ visit was their time spent with WWII veteran Joe Demler (shown above), who autographed a copy of Life magazine from 1945 that featured a photo of him after he was liberated from a German POW camp. Joe became known as the “human skeleton” because he weighed just 70 pounds. Doctors said he was just days away from dying. He now lives in Port Washington.
Many thanks to WWII veterans Joe Demler and Art Schmitz and Vietnam veterans Bob Pfeiffer, John Koeppen, Ruby Scheuing and Mike Malloy for presenting to this group.
