The memorial, not only honors the firefighters, police, first responders, Port Authority officers and civilians who died in that attack, but also the military service members killed in the ensuing wars on terrorism.
The memorial was dedicated at the War Memorial Center on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. War Memorial Board Member and Vietnam Veteran Joe Campbell, who volunteered (along with Mark Fox, a retired Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief) to drive to New York and back to get the steel artifact (#H-0041a) said about this memorial, “It represents what freedom is all about. It is not free. We have to defend it. We have to preserve it and obviously, unfortunately, we have to flight for it.“
