WMC Commemorates Purple Heart Day

Purple Heart Day

On Monday, August 7, 2017 veterans gathered in Veterans Courtyard at WMC in front of our Purple Heart Memorial to honor Purple Heart Day, which is nationally recognized on August 7 each year.

George Washington awarded the first purple heart (then called the “Badge of Military Merit”) on August 7, 1782. It is the oldest military honor, and is given to those injured or killed in the line of duty.

Local Vietnam veteran George Banda displayed photos at the ceremony (shown below) featuring soldiers from Vietnam who were all Purple Heart recipients, all were killed during the war.

You can honor those given the Purple Heart any day of the year at our Purple Heart Memorial located on the south side of Veterans Courtyard next to the reflecting pool.
