Gold Star Family Memorial Dedication Ceremony
The War Memorial Center is dedicating a new memorial to honor Gold Star Families and their incredible sacrifice.
The Gold Star Family Memorial will be dedicated on Saturday, Nov. 5th, immediately following the Veterans Day Parade. The approximate starting time for the ceremony will be between Noon and 12:30 p.m.)
About the Gold Star Family Memorial
The new memorial will have a place of honor in Veterans Courtyard, in close proximity to the Honor Roll, which pays tribute to the 3,481 Milwaukee County residents killed in action since World War II.
The Gold Star Family Memorial will remind all who visit, that behind each of those names, is a family forever changed.
To mark this dedication, two Gold Star Families will take part in the ceremony and speak about our powerful new memorial.
John is the father of Michelle Witmer, who was killed in the Iraq war.
He is also the author of Sisters in Arms: A Father Remembers, which tells the story of his three daughters who went off to war together as members of the Wisconsin National Guard.
Janine is the sister of Medal of Honor recipient Air Force Captain Lance Sijan, who was killed in the Vietnam War.
Captain Sijan’s story was immortalized in the book This Life – The Lance Sijan Story, which Janine co-wrote with Stephen Miller. The book details her brother’s boyhood in Milwaukee to his harrowing experiences in Vietnam after his plane went down over the mountains of Laos.
Lance’s story was also covered by WITI FOX6 News in February 2016.
