Many thanks to local history hunters Margaret Berres and Tom Ludka, who visited the WMC on May 22, 2017 to talk about their work in identifying the final resting places of the area’s Civil War veterans.

Over the past 15 years, Ludka, a 29-year U.S. military veteran and Berres, curator of the Oak Creek Historical Society, have found the burial sites of more than 150 unmarked graves of Civil War veterans  — two of them Medal of Honor recipients and one from the War of 1812.

Notably, Berres and Ludka have petitioned the U.S. government for the free headstones, which were promised for all veterans.
