Milwaukee County War Memorial

Donor Spotlight: Clayton and Alice Chipman

Chip and Alice Chipman

Clayton (aka “Chip”) and Alice Chipman have long been close friends and supporters of the War Memorial Center. Married in 1952 with two daughters, the Chipmans were instrumental in establishing the Purple Heart Memorial located at the War Memorial Center and you will always see them at our annual Memorial Day service.

Chip was 17 when he dropped out of high school to join the Marines. A Purple Heart recipient and survivor of the battle of Iwo Jima, Chip at 90-years-old, is still active in several veterans organizations including the Marine Corps League, 4th Marine Division Association and Wisconsin AMVETS. In 2012, Chip received well deserved recognition for his service to our nation and continued service to veterans as Milwaukee’s Veteran of the Year. After service, Chip went back to school and dedicated his life to education as a teacher and principal. We are honored to have captured Chip’s personal story of his WWII experiences in our Veterans Story Project.

We are honored to call Chip and Alice our friends, and we thank you for all you have done to honor the service of veterans. A special Happy Birthday to Chip this month from the War Memorial!
